These screenings provide area residents with a low cost way to monitor a chronic illness such as diabetes or high cholesterol, a baseline, or a regular check on heart, thyroid and kidney functioning to name a few and help keep our communities healthy and happy.

Thomas Names Helpmates Employee of the Year

Michelle ThomasMichele Thomas, Direct Care Worker (DCW) from Helpmates, Inc. Erie Co. office, recently earned the title of “Helpmates, Inc. 2012 DCW of the Year.” Thomas was one of 20 employees from the 20 Helpmates, Inc. office locations nominated for the title. To be eligible for the nomination employees had to meet certain criteria which included being named “Employee of the Month” during 2012 at their office location. Nominees were also rated based on their accomplishments in 2012 along with excellence in service, dedication, reliability, attitude and work performance. For her accomplishment Michele was honored at a luncheon held at the main office in Ridgway on March 1st, 2013 were she was also presented with an award certificate and a plaque. Michele also will receive a week of paid time off and a monetary bonus.

Michele began her career with Helpmates, Inc. in 2010 and will celebrate her 3 year anniversary in October. She has received numerous “Above and Beyond” awards for the dedication she has shown to her consumers and the agency. Michele received recommendations for “DCW of the Year” from her Helpmates, Inc. supervisors because of her work ethic, dedication and motivation. Melissa Schodt, Erie Co. Service Manager stated “Michele always shows a great deal of respect and compassion for the consumers and their families along with fellow employees and her supervisors.” When asked what she enjoys about her job Michele stated “I enjoy helping the consumers with needed tasks, lending a listening ear plus I gain wisdom from their life experiences. My boss Missy is great, treats me with respect and is nice about tweaking my schedule if needed.” In any spare time she has Michele enjoys cooking and crocheting. She also enjoys collecting such things as miniatures and snoopy items. Michele resides in Union City with her husband Daniel and they have four children; Amy, Tim, Kim and Dan along with 8 grandchildren.

Vicki Kauffman and Kay Dayton, Direct Care Workers (DCW) for Helpmates, Inc., recently placed as 2nd and 3rd runner-up for the 2012 DCW of the Year. Kauffman is from the Northumberland Co. office and Dayton is from the Crawford Co. office. Vicki has been employed by Helpmates, Inc. for 7 years and Kay will celebrate her 3 year anniversary date in July. Both have received numerous “Above and Beyond” awards for the dedication they have shown to their consumers and the agency. For their accomplishment Vicki and Kay will receive extra paid time off and a monetary bonus. They were also recognized at a luncheon held at the corporate office on
March 1st, 2013 where both received an award certificate.

Vicki is a life long resident of Sunbury, PA. She and her husband James have been married for 33 years and are the parents of two daughters, Amanda and Katherine. When not working Vicki enjoys spending time with her family including going on vacations together. She also enjoys reading on her Nook and going to concerts. When asked why she enjoys working for Helpmates, Inc. Vicki stated “I enjoy my clients and my boss Angela along with the flexible hours. I enjoy caring for people and helping others.”

Kay grew up in Utica and following her graduation from high school she worked at the  Polk Center for 2 years caring for residents there. Kay then did janitorial work for 10 years and after that went back to work as a personal care aide at VNA. Prior to joining Helpmates, Inc. in July, 2010 she also worked caring for a stroke survivor for 3 years. Kay resides in Meadville with her husband Robert. They are the parents of two children, Tricia (Michael) Hedglin who resides in Butler and Emily Dayton who lives in Meadville. Kay and Robert are also the proud grandparents of 2 girls and 1 boy; Taylor, Mesa and Alex. In her spare time Kay enjoys collecting hummingbirds and blown glass items. She enjoys walks in the woods and sitting on her screened - in porch watching the wild life activity. When asked why she enjoys working for Helpmates, Inc. Kay stated “I like working with people on an individual basis, everyday is a challenge to be met.” Kay also stated “the office personnel has been very helpful and reasonable.”

CCN Receives Deficiency Free Survey

Clearfield Community Nurses (CCN) received a deficiency free survey from the Department of Health. The unannounced Medicare recertification survey was conducted in early November of 2011 at which time CCN was found to be in complete compliance with federal and state regulations regarding home health agencies.

Helpmates, Inc. COO Appointed to OLTL Quality Council

Dawn Foringer, MSW, COO of Helpmates, Inc. Home Care Agency has been appointed to the Office of Long Term Living’s (OLTL) Quality Council. The Quality Council is an advisory body reporting to the Director of the Office of Quality Management Metrics and Analytics (QMMA) within the Office of Long Term Living. The Quality Council’s primary role is to review periodic summary findings collected and presented by QMMA. The purpose of this review is to identify quality concerns and recommend corrections and improvements to the OLTL programs. In addition to recommending strategies for improving quality based on trend data collected by the OLTL, the Quality Council may also provide input into any new process and procedures related to quality management.

The council is currently comprised of 18 members statewide including state staff, consumers, advocates and providers as OLTL stakeholders. Foringer is one of eight newly appointed members. Helpmates, Inc. is also a member of the PA Homecare Association (PHA) and has been actively involved for many years.
